Financial Aid

Students must have funding secured prior to the start of training and must pay half the tuition and fees no later than 30 days prior to the first day of training to secure their place in the training program. Written proof of approved funding to cover entire program costs may be submitted in lieu of payment.

AVTEC accepts funding from most funding sources that provide written Billing Authorization detailing what will be funded by the organization. The written Billing Authorization is a commitment by the organization to pay what they have agreed to pay. Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

Federal Pell Grants and Federal Direct Loans (Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans) are available to qualified students. Applicants must submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), via the web at https://studentaid.gov.

Funding for Federal Pell Grants is based on financial need exhibited by the student, based on their prior-prior-year tax return information. Applicants may be required to provide a Tax Return Transcript for the prior years’ tax return, the Tax Return Transcript can be obtained from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

All funds awarded are subject to Federal and State regulations and AVTEC policy. These funds are disbursed in two disbursements, one at the beginning of training, and the second when half of the training is completed. Students must meet AVTEC’s definition of Satisfactory Academic Progress to receive the funds.

OTHER FINANCIAL AID SOURCES

The Alaska Supplemental Education Loan and Alaska Family Education Loans may be applied for online at: https://acpe.alaska.gov/LOANS/Student-Loan

Parent PLUS Loans are also accepted by AVTEC and may be applied for online: https://studentaid.gov/.

Students should contact the Workforce Investment Opportunity Act (WIOA) offices within their regions to see if they may qualify for WIOA funds. Check with the State of Alaska Job Center for more information.

Other financial aid sources are the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Native Corporations, Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR), and the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA). To find out qualifications for funding, contact the agencies directly.

Occasionally students are eligible to receive unemployment insurance benefits while attending training. For more information, contact Unemployment Insurance at (888) 252-2557.

Workforce Innovation and Opportunities Act (WIOA)

AVTEC is proud to be a long-time grantee for the federally funded WIOA Youth Grant, a partnership which supports eligible youth to enter and complete training at AVTEC, overcome barriers to employment, and enter Alaska’s workforce in careers with competitive wages and advancement opportunities.

AVTEC’s on-site WIOA youth grant program coordinator works directly with eligible participants on a needs assessment and service strategy that can pay tuition, tools, housing, transportation, and other support service costs necessary for training and employment success. The program also supports participants with comprehensive support services including on-campus paid work experience opportunities, follow-up services, guidance and mentoring, and financial literacy education. The youth grant benefits everyone training at AVTEC as programs designed with WIOA in mind are often made available to other AVTEC students.

Who Qualifies/How to Apply
Current or prospective AVTEC students under the age of 25 who face barriers to employment may qualify for this program. Individuals may apply for the WIOA grant at any point before or during their training by contacting Tekla Shaw, the on-site WIOA Program Coordinator at (907) 224-6173.

This project is federally funded at 55% & non-federally funded at 45%.
